Airplanes and Emails and Sheep, Oh My!

If you haven’t seen me in person for a few days, here’s the look that’s been pretty much plastered on my face this whole time:

This expression, but hopefully less … red. Excuse the photo quality.

Today I took the final step of booking my flights, so it’s official and I can finally announce it: I’m WWOOFing in Scotland this spring!

A few years ago, I met someone who was WWOOFing through France, and ever since then, I’ve been interested in the organization. It stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, and for an annual fee in the country you’re interested in (only £20 for WWOOF-UK), you have access to all the registered organic farms in that country.

Last Sunday, I finally joined WWOOF-UK. On Wednesday, I emailed a few host farms to see if they’d have a space for me. On Friday, I confirmed with Peter that I’d come in mid-April and stay through mid-May. And today, I booked my flights.

I’ve always thought sheep were cute ever since I was a little kid, but as I got older and more into knitting, I became interested in raising sheep for their wool, to card and spin it, to dye it, and to knit beautiful things with it. And now, after many trips to the UK with the bucolic and relaxing sound of sheep bleating everywhere I visited, I’m finally taking the step to see what raising them is all about. I’ll also be helping with planting, painting, building, and winemaking on the farm, which is in a remote area of northeast Scotland, near the coast where the dolphins are visible from shore.

My more urban friends are aghast at the very idea. And that’s why they’re not going and I am! 🙂 I’m not claiming to know what it’s all about, and that’s part of the risk and adventure. I’m going in order to learn. Even if I learn that I hate it (which is highly unlikely, let’s be honest) or that I suck at it (totally possible), at least I’ll have given it a try.

Can you say the same about your dreams?

    • I’m sure to hug a sheep for you. I have a feeling it’ll look more like wrestling the sheep to the ground to give it shots or whatever, but sure, we’ll call it hugging. 😉 I can’t wait to share stories and pictures!
